NEXT EVENT | GENEYE 2025 - Next Generation Surgical Training

  • The premise of GENEYE is that we train the skills, mind and body that are required for high performance in eye care and we also have discussions about wellbeing as we believe that for high performance we also need to look after ourselves and each other.

We don’t have lectures because 1) they’re boring and 2) they have been shown to be of low education value.  We train by doing and every learner is involved.

This years stations are on eye surgery, microscope use, breathwork, exercise physiology, career planning (for different stages), virtual reality, artificial intelligence and more.

DATE | 21st or 22nd or 23rd May 2025
Day 1 - 21st May is for prevocational trainees, junior doctors, orthoptists, optometrists and nurses.

GENEYE 2024

19th - 21st JUNE 2024, ROYAL VICTORlAN EYE AND EAR HOSPITAL

GENEYE Live 2024 ran from 19-21 June at the Eye and Ear Education Precinct. On behalf of the GENEYE faculty, I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all participants for making this year’s event such a success. Your enthusiasm, positivity, and energy were truly infectious, and it made the entire experience incredibly fun and rewarding for everyone involved.

The new education precinct at the Eye and Ear was nothing short of amazing, providing the perfect environment for us to connect, learn, and grow together. At GENEYE, we believe in taking care of ourselves and each other so that we can better look after our patients, and this year's event was a testament to that ethos.

We are grateful for the time you took out of your week to join us. Initial feedback has been excellent, and we welcome any further suggestions as we aim to improve every year. Here’s a brief summary of what we achieved together:

EVENT SUMMARY

GENEYE 2023

23 - 25 MAY 2023, GLASSHAUS BRUCKE , MELBOURNE

GENEYE Live 2023 ran across three days from the 23rd - 25th May at the beautiful Glasshaus Brucke in Richmond. Attendees appreciated getting out of the hospital for a day and soaking in the energy that comes from a group of like-minded surgeons getting together in the one space to talk about their favourite topics. Attendees enjoyed using the latest techniques and technologies to train their mind, body and skills for high performance in the surgical space and relished in the opportunity to spark conversations about innovations and improvements that we will hopefully continue to see in the future.

EVENT SUMMARY

DAY 1 – 23 May 2023

Medical students, orthoptists, junior doctors and one optometrist attended day 1 and enjoyed learning basic intraocular microsurgery, the steps of cataract surgery, how to consent patients for surgery, the psychology of high performance, body ergonomics and more.

GENEYE 2019

14 - 16 MAY 2019, PARK HYATT, MELBOURNE

EVENT SUMMARY

DAY 1

Day 1 was fully booked, and the crowd enjoyed the immersive content. It was great to be surrounded by the enthusiasm of future ophthalmologists, and to see how fast they can learn. Simulators were getting a workout as attendees put them through their paces, and we also enjoyed seeing how attendees managed to learn microscope use, instrument navigation and to suture with 10-0 Nylon all at once. It was amazing to see these young surgeons open their minds to realise the different skill requirements of surgeons, and we hope that this helps them with any surgical field they may choose in the future. Attendees on Day 1 approached all stations with enthusiasm and seemed to want as much microscope time as possible, as well as also enjoying a bit of virtual reality gaming.

DAYS 2 + 3

Days 2 and 3 were dedicated to consultant ophthalmologists and advanced trainees who focused on their knowledge, skills, mind, and bodies in pursuit of ongoing improvement. They participated in complex patient discussions, virtual reality surgeries, IOL exchanges, and values-based career decisions with the help of psychologists and peers. The afternoons were filled with mind, body, and knowledge stations, and each day concluded with networking sessions over drinks and delicious food.

DAYS 2 + 3

Day 2 and 3 saw consultant ophthalmologists and advanced trainees from around the country focusing also on their knowledge, mind and bodies in the pursuit of ongoing improvement. Attendees learned from each other and from simulated patients about consenting patients for presbyopia correction at the time of cataract surgery. They worked on complicated capsulorhexis and anterior vitrectomy in virtual reality, and then at the mind station, together with psychologists and peers discussed how to focus time, attention, and energy for high performance in their work, life or in general. Attendees then went on to enjoy many other body, mind and knowledge stations in the afternoon. Each day concluded with an opportunity to network over drinks and delicious food.

DAYS 2 + 3

Days 2 and 3 were highly successful with attendees almost at full capacity. Day 2 saw a collaborative event with attendees learning from each other as much as the facilitators. Feedback from that day led to some modifications on day 3 which allowed stations to run even smoother with most attendees completing all stations offered, with plenty of time for extra practice. Attendees responded to the Mind Lab station well – something we consider important to work on as surgeons and a first for surgical education in Australia. It was fun to see surgeons practicing advanced techniques on the simulators in the afternoon – exactly where we think new skills should be learnt!
